A little at a time, we are moving everything to the Cloud. The big news at the end of March was the launch of CloudPlayer by Amazon.com, an application that allows users to listen to music on any PC that has a browser or on an Android Smartphone. The music is stored and streamed from CloudDrive, an online data storage system being marketed initially as music storage but with an eye at becoming much more. The advertising at Amazon.com is pretty persuasive and features a brief video clip describing the evolution of digital music usage and some common frustrations that will now be answered by Amazon’s Cloud music solution. As I read the information on the site, I found it irresistible to download the player and try it out. The installation took me to a screen for uploading my existing mp3s to the newly created Just-For-Me CloudDrive, which is initially offered with 5 GB of storage. This is where the catch comes in.

With Dropbox, a Cloud storage solution I use constantly for syncing mostly document files from home to laptop to work, I am only using maybe 25% of the 3GB available to me. Checking my iTunes folder (and you must understand I consider myself an extremely casual user) I found it was an eye-popping 70GB. Where did that come from? Well, a large portion was video, including TV shows and movie trailers, that I didn’t really need to transfer to the Cloud. Still, isn’t the point of cloud storage that you can access and share any of your files from wherever you are at the moment? This is what Amazon, and others to follow, are counting on. Like anything addictive, the first taste is free with a hope that you will find you can’t live without it. The cost for additional storage is exactly $1 per GB per year, with 50, 100, 200, 500, or 1000GB levels available. My plan is to purchase an album from Amazon, which will increase the storage to 20GB, upload as much of my music as I can, install the CloudPlayer on my Motorola CLIQ, and see how long I can go before I find I can’t live without an additional storage plan. “The inspiration for Piano Diaries… umm… ah! well, actually, the very first album I thought of, for MOA, the virtual album platform, when we were developing it was Piano Diaries… and it was even in my prototypes of images which I developed and we did an early alpha prototype back in 2008 before I met all the people in India…” (he takes a long pause)… “and that was the very first album… and the idea is that, unlike a conventional album, or CD… the virtual album is of course a dynamic ongoing album, and the obvious candidate for that from my standpoint, as a musician, composer and pianist, and singer, songwriter was Piano Diaries, like a Piano Blog… that I could just add entries to, whenever I felt like it… I think ideally on a daily basis, in reality that does not happen…. but the entries are essentially all improvised, kind of whats on my mind… musically that day, and I then, try to tie in some little pithy remark about that… sometimes there’s some connection going through my mind with the music and I put that down in the track notes, so, it’s really like a piano diary… its just… not structured, not planned… just kind of what goes on in my head musically on any given day… and thats the history behind it…”
