Dog enthusiasts today continuously immerse themselves in the vast literature which basically revolves around scientific studies and medical research on the health of the canine species. According to most of these studies, one of the major problems concerning man’s best friend thus far is skin related diseases resulting from various sources. Reports show that the number of cases of dogs affected with skin related diseases has dramatically increased throughout the years. Meaning to say, there is something that is very wrong with the way this issue is being treated. With all the resources currently available at our disposal at anytime of the day, it is such a shame that a sad statistic readily awaits the canine friendly community. Because of this rather alarming news, credible institutions have figured that this is fast becoming the main reason why dogs are being brought to pet clinics for examination by various licensed veterinarians.

To make matters a lot worse, there are also some studies which point to the discovery that most of these dog skin diseases are allegedly hereditary making some breeds coming from affected dogs more prone than others. Such dog skin diseases or allergies involve the gradual surfacing of certain rashes or irritations throughout several portions of the dog’s body. These allergies can come or spring from a lot of various different sources or causes and they can do a whole range of harm to your pet dog. Allergies are the body’s rational and logical way of letting the host knows that a foreign element that is not beneficial to the body has landed the skin and taken hold of the host’s body system. Meaning to say that such occurrence, if left untreated, can have a domino effect from within the dog’s body and ultimately impair and eat away the host’s immune system, which can further along lead to more and more complications, the most fatal and extreme of which is an organ failure. While with humans, the upper respiratory tract is the first one to take the hit, causing shortness of breath and a lowered immune system, with animals most especially dogs it is the skin that first shows indication hinting of infection.

That is why in examining the illness and looking for the right medicine or treatment, it is very crucial to first identify what kind of allergen or foreign element took hold and infected the host in order to properly and more suitably address the issue and the disease. There are several methods and ways to address and treat the problem of dog skin diseases. Most of them seek to prevent the development of fleas and other such parasites from infesting the skin of the host and therefore preventing eventual skin problems and complications from ever developing. On the other hand, in already existing conditions which have escaped the more preferable case of prevention are medicines like topical or spot on treatments which may be easier to use for some and may be able to relieve any pain and provide more immediate comfort for infected areas. In dealing with such matters, it is best to be well informed for the sake of our beloved dogs.

The classic show in television is something that can be considered similar to anything as classic as the Shakespearean plays or Dickens’s work in terms of literature and therefore is hard to come by. To attain this, the show has to be equally well accepted by the viewers and critics alike. The comedy shows are more difficult in this context to turn into classics as it is not easy to create a script and characters that are good clearly defined and yet hilarious. But when you watch Seinfeld, you see a perfect combination of all these things and more, so it does not come as a surprise to the viewer when it is said that this show is amongst the classic of television comedies.

The show was launched in 1989 and continued on the screen for nine seasons, before singing off in 1998. It was a success in more ways than one! It was critically acclaimed for its unique presentation and an out of the usual plot, it was also loved by the audience for its hilarious content and most importantly it was constantly on the top rankings of the television programs for almost the entire run of its online duration. So much so that it is still searched for by the fans who either buy a DVD of it or watch Seinfeld online. There are various websites that present the Seinfeld episodes of the show pertaining to all the seasons online. Therefore, fans can watch whichever episode they feel like watching.

The plot of the show is quite unlike the existing norms for a sitcom at that time. Mostly such shows had a family or a situation as a base to create comedy, but Seinfeld was a show, which had characters that were related in blood and created comical sequences based on mundane and minutiae incidences. When you watch Seinfeld you laugh at these sequences and it is as refreshing online as it was back then on television. The show revolves around the fictionalized self-portrayal of Jerry Seinfeld as a normal guy, and entering into the above mentioned comic sequences with his friend or neighbour or ex-girlfriend. Each of whom is a quite ably played by Jason Alexander, Michael Richards and Julia Louis-Dreyfus respectively.

The fans who access Seinfeld episodes online definitely have their favourites amongst these characters although the lead character of Jerry Seinfeld is the main attraction in more ways than one, and garners most fan base. He is a stand-up comedian and he is shown in the beginning and towards the end of each episode cracking jokes, some of which is based on the episodes’ incidences.

This year, running from the 29th January to the 5th February, it was National Storytelling Week’ which celebrates the art of storytelling and wants to make more people aware of the link between cities and major works of fiction. London has long been the setting for many classics. Dickens wrote about London a lot in ‘A Tale of two Cities’ and ‘Oliver Twist’. Other classics which were set in London were ‘Vanity Fair’ ‘The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’ and ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’. The most famous detective of all, Sherlock Holmes, who was purported to live at 221 Baker Street, still has many people coming from all over the world, hoping to see his house! Recent books which are set in London are ‘Mary Poppins’ written by P.L. Travers and ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’ by Helen Fielding.

Using one of the many Paris hotels explore the city that was the setting for Victor Hugo’s ‘Les Miserables’ and ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’. Originally written in the 1830s, these classics are still popular today and have been made into films and musicals. Other classics which use Paris as their setting are Dickens’ ‘Tale of Two Cities’ and Poe’s ‘Murder in The Rue Morgue. The British author, George Orwell wrote about his early experiences as a tramp in the novel ‘Down and Out in Paris and London’.

Ediburgh hotels are a good starting point to discover this city’s rich literary history. Many famous writers including Robert Louis Stevenson and Sir Walter Scott lived and worked in Edinburgh and Harry Potter’s creator, J K Rowling penned his adventures in Nicolson’s cafe in the heart of the city. The crime novels of Ian Rankin, featuring Inspector Rebus also have Edinburgh as their setting. Whilst in Edinburgh, be sure to visit the grave of Greyfriars Bobby. It’s the heart-warming true story of a dog’s love for his master, even after death. Written by Eleanor Atkinson, it is still read worldwide. A modern day author who bases his books around Edinburgh is the creator of ‘Train Spotting’, Irvine Welsh. Two of his novels ‘Filth’ and ‘The Acid House’ use authentic Edinburgh dialect which can make them difficult to read!

Use Madrid hotels as a base to explore the rich diversity of Spanish literature. The most famous fictional character from Spain has to be Don Quixote. He was conceived in the 1600s by Miguel Cervantes, who chronicled the exploits of this hapless knight and his sidekick. This work of fiction is still delighting readers more than 500 years later. Every city has great works of literature associated with it. The American author, Ernest Hemingway lived in Spain for many years and a lot of his novels are centred around Madrid. ‘Death in the Afternoon’ details the ceremony and traditions of bull fighting – a subject he was very interested in. His famous trilogy ‘The Sun Also Rises’ was based in Madrid and is regarded by many to be his greatest work.

Difficult literary texts have always been the ones that remain almost permanently fixed on the shelves, whether at bookstores, libraries, or at homes. This is true everywhere all over the world but in many places of Southeast Asia, they don’t even get the chance to climb up the shelves to scare away the never-would-be readers. The enigma behind this is somewhat interesting and even educational.

Some literary works are indeed difficult, to say the least. A work like James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake can be taken as a good example. Samuel Becket, who wrote down most it for Joyce and also translated it into French, once said that it was never meant to be understood. I rest my case concerning that brilliant piece of art work. But some other works, like Ulysses, if we are to go back to Mr. Joyce’s works again, is hardy as unreadable as most people claim it to be. It is definitely not a light read, but not also as unearthly as many claim it to be. And what struck me most is, around eight out of ten persons living in the Southeast Asians countries where I have lived and talked with and who say that they don’t read it because it is unreadable, had never even touched or worse, seen a copy of it.

I would like to attempt dividing the reluctant readers into two groups. In the first group are those who I take as being swept away by the often exaggerated rumors that surround those works. The works that I’m referring to are like the ‘Ulysses’, Thomas Mann’s Magic Mountain, Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity Rainbow, the plays of Samuel Beckett, and the poetical works like that of Wallace Stevens. These works were never anything close to easy reads. They are for me mountains to climb, and somewhere up there, there are rewarding peaks waiting for the earnest readers. They do demand great efforts but they are certainly not unreadable. Of course for those who are looking for a light read, these are definitely not what they are looking for, but as lovers of literature, they will also be definitely missing a lot.

The other group is those who are constantly in pursuit of information in a never ending strife to gain control in a world where they had little say in it. For people like them, familiarity is the key to certainty which somewhat relieves them from the doubts that follow them wherever they go. Acquiring as much information as they can increases their space of familiarity which they are most obsessed with. For those type of people, flirtations that difficult literature brings is hard for them to entertain as they lost their center and the familiarities that kept them safe and away from uncharted territories. The strange and somewhat amusing irony is that many of those difficult to read literary works were addressed to and were also a kind of response against that sort of centering. For most artists and thinkers today, the finding of a center is not unlike a wild goose chase as a complete picture or meaning of something can never be obtained as whatever that was obtained was only a trace, a partial truth.

A few weeks ago I read a poem by John Ashbery to one of my young students. After having read it, I asked her what she thought about the poems. She looked at me with a satisfied smile and said, “I don’t understand everything it says but it was so beautiful!” Again I rest my case.

Oleander smile is the longest english poem in the world to be published. At 40,040 lines in length, the poem is a colossal tome! No other published english poem in the world since the year 1000 A.D. comes close to its size! There is no modern english poem in the world today that even comes close to the length of the colossal english poem, Oleander Smile.

The gigantic english poem confronts the topic of the ambivalence of adult human nature: so complex, and so unfair, since even if you may be right with all the evidence, you end up still being wrong! You may identify with this scenario in your own personal experiences. But despite the ambivalence of adult human nature, embrace your instincts and gut feeling in doing the ‘right thing’ whatever it may be. And most of all, it is alright to have the child-like attitude of not giving up, stand up whenever you fall, and persevere with a positive outlook. Why? Because adults easily get too pessimistic and brooding when a problem is overwhelming. Not children: they learn to move on and learn from the problem, not linger and brood over it. Once adults achieve embracing their gut feeling and the child-like attitude of being positive and learn from adversity, then that adult can smile like the oleander flower blooming in the garden of bliss.

Published by LuLu (www.LuLu.com), Oleander Smile does not fit into the standard traditional genre of english poetry. The poem is more like Language Poetry with a stream-of-consciousness feel and mood. Oleander Smile will become truly a timeless masterpiece in english literature!
