The very controversial switchblade knife has been around a very long time. This blade is the size and shape of most of you average pocket knives but with a  twist.  With the push of a button a spring pops the blade out and is ready to be used.  There are two sorts of switchblades one opens though the top, and one from the side.

The blade that opens from the side is much like other pocket knives. You push the button and the blade swings out the side like any other knife. The out-the-front or the OTF switchblade, pops out the front as the name suggest. Now there are two different types of OTF blades a single and double action. The single action is when you push the button and the blade pops out and then you have to manually push the blade back in. The double action is the same this the different of that to put the blade back in you just push the button again. These knives have been at the center of controversy for years, because of the popularity with criminals. People that might want to brake the law like these knives for there very quick opening systems.

The concept  of these  spring loaded blades have been around for many years. With examples of them appearing on flintlock pistols and on coach guns as early as 1700s. Then later in 1790s being made a more offered tool. Many of the early examples switchblades are either English, of French.

Right after the civil war in America knife production was industrialized.  That is when the first American switchblade was made. It is called the Korn Patent knife. These blades really took off in the 1890s and where even soled to lady’s to put in there sewing kits. Then Italian makers got in to the switchblade game and that is where we get the knives called Stilettos.

Later street gangs started to use these knives and  there started the bad name for switchblades.  People started to think that if they put a ban on them that it would stop gang violence. The US congress chose to make these knives illegal. So in the 1960s switchblades that where made in America where only being soled to the military. Later knife makers found away around these laws by selling switchblades in build it your self kits. Now though this loophole is closed in many states.

The legality of these knives differs for country to country. Although many country’s banned them and many more have very strict laws, you can carry them in some country’s.  In the United States you can not carry them on federal lands, Indian reservations, military bases, or Washington DC. The Act that limits switchblades also limits Ballistic knives. But other then that the federal government leaves the rest of the decision making to the individual states.

In many states the are out right illegal, and in some they are perfectly legal. Then there are a few that they are legal but with some guide lines. In Missouri, Montana, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas they are illegal, but exceptions are made for antiques and collectors. In Virginia you can own one but you can’t sell one. In Rhode Island you can own one but it can’t have a dagger, dirk, or stiletto blade. In Ohio you can have one but you have to buy it though a online retailer. In New York you and have one but only if you have a hunting or fishing license.  So of these laws are pretty out there but to each there own.

Ever since collectors have been hoarding pieces of value and interest, antique cabinets have been around to house and show off these precious items. However, the cabinets themselves are also treasures in their own right and over many hundreds of years have been dressed to impress to provide a taster of the glories to be viewed inside. From the Italian Renaissance, to Louis Quatorze and throughout the multifaceted styling of the Georgian period, whether large and enclosed, glazed or put on a stand, antique cabinets retain their popularity and still remain as useful pieces of storage today.

One version of the Renaissance antique cabinet was basically a large and square piece of architecturally built furniture with solid doors. It is from this piece of early furniture that the modern wardrobe derives. Although not commonly made in Britain during the 16th century, it became a standard piece of furniture in Spain, Germany and particularly in France where the large armoire has always been popular. Later 17th century country made Baroque armoires often incorporated some Gothic elements into their styling.

The Italian Renaissance antique cabinets on the other hand were smaller and more of what we consider the cabinet to be, with large numbers of drawers set within a carcass and the whole thing placed upon a stand. These cabinets with pediments, pilasters and mini front doors were again architectural in design, and the stands often had columns in the style of female statues or caryatids. The stand itself was usually around two and a half feet high and the cabinet was raised up in this way.

The popularity of the multi drawer antique cabinet on a stand reached its height in Britain with the return of Charles II from exile in France in 1660. Chinese cabinets had already been finding their way to Britain since Elizabethan times. However the fashion was for these heavily lacquered and gilded eastern cabinets to be displayed in the Louis Quatorze style, which meant they were placed on a distinctly European stand. These stands, minus their Chinese cabinets, turn up from time to time converted to marble topped side tables. Some may consider their value less because of this conversion from their original use.

The English glass fronted antique china cabinet came into being during the reign of William and Mary (1689-1702). Much blue and white porcelain was being imported from China at this time. European influences, via Huguenot cabinet makers, all added to create what became an essentially English china cabinet. By the middle of the 18th century any number of bureau and breakfront bookcases, china cabinets and corner cabinets were being constructed and during the Georgian period these now standard pieces of case furniture were adopting the varying styles and features of Rococo and later Neoclassical themes. This 18th century English styling was revived many times during the Victorian era, throughout the 20th century and right up to modern day.

Whether for personal treasures and objet d’art, china, books, or general household storage, there are a wealth of different ages and styles of both period and revival antique cabinets on the market.

Modern furniture is more popular than ever these days, for several reasons. Many people choose the latest designs because they love the look, the livability, and the advantages over antique furniture. This is why modern designer furniture is considered more beautiful than antique furniture.

The appearance of modern designer furniture is what attracts most buyers. Clean lines, contemporary colors, and unconventional design offer beauty and fashion to any room. Modern furniture’s flawless form can bring excitement, elegance, or a calming quality to a room. This versatility makes modern furniture appropriate for any style from traditional to contemporary. If you compare modern designer armchairs to an antique version, the modern chairs will seem much more striking, smart, and good-looking.

Furniture designed today can be seen as being considerably more livable than antiques because modern designers will typically consider comfort, ease of maintenance, and multiple uses of a piece. Today’s furniture has a variety of inventive products like foam, and man-made materials that make them more comfortable than the fixtures of yesterday. Newer fabrics and surface protectors also make them easy to clean and take care of. Modern furniture is designed for modern lifestyles and most pieces are more compatible with technology than a historic piece would be. For example, you can find designer armchairs or sofas that have large flat arms that double as a side table to hold drinks or even a laptop.

Antiques simply cannot compare to the brilliance of modern furnishings. They are not as attractive, practical, or unfussy as the furniture available today. First of all, antiques can look cluttered and chaotic in a room because of the ornate styles and unfashionable materials used. Second, antiques are not as versatile or functional these days since they were designed before the current demands of modern lifestyles and technology. Finally, modern design furnishings are superior to antiques because they are effortless. They require little maintenance and are gorgeous in any setting.

It is important to remember that sometimes modern furnishings are eye-catching because they portray the aspects of antiques that we enjoy in a fresh, innovative way. It is easy to find a designer armchair or coffee table inspired by the past. The retro 60′s style is trendy, and simplified versions of traditional armchairs are also in style. Modern designers often bring new interpretations to long forgotten objects while improving on them.

Modern furniture can fit any style, budget, or space. It is also easy to find online or in stores. You can enjoy the look, the livability, and the advantages of modern designer furniture for many years.

When investing in antique dining chairs, spotting the genuine antique from a fake is not always straightforward. Period 18th century antique dining chairs have been revived many times during the Victorian era, and all through the 20th century, so at best these pieces can be referred to as revivals or even reproductions rather than fakes.

The cost of 18th century antique dining chairs can be prohibitively expensive anyway, so for those of us on a more modest budget, revival and reproduction would be the way to go. However, being able to identify certain designers and styles, and perhaps a handmade original piece from a machine made revival, is quite useful. Although not all antique dining chairs follow the styling of Chippendale, Hepplewhite and Sheraton, many do, so having a working knowledge of what these chairs may look like is also a good place to start.

As Chippendale, Hepplewhite and Sheraton were furniture designers rather than makers, it will be difficult if not impossible to find a piece of 18th century furniture that can be attributed to one of these designers. However, understanding what a chair by one of these makers may look like and knowing the difference between a period Chippendale chair and a Victorian Chippendale revival will help. The difference in age between these two is around 100 years. Both will have the characteristic bow shaped top rail and the pierced and highly carved splat and cabriole leg. However, the earlier period chair will have been handmade and the carving more free flowing, whereas the splat of the Victorian revival piece will be more stylised where it is machine carved rather than handmade. Often period examples will have acanthus carvings on the knees of the cabriole leg where the legs on revival chairs will be plainer.

Neo classical design was also revived during the Victorian and Edwardian eras and throughout the 20th century. The designs of Hepplewhite and Sheraton tended to be much simpler than those of Chippendale, although there are plainer period and revival versions of Chippendale antique dining chairs around. Hepplewhite’s designs followed more in the style of Robert Adam and the backs of his chairs were often oval or shield shaped and legs tapered rather than cabriole. Sheraton’s designs were rectilinear with plain styling and square backs and turned tapered legs. His designs were revived heavily during the Edwardian period and because of their plain styling, remain very popular today.

During the Victorian era, many much earlier styles of chair were also revived and mass production was able to produce many pastiches, such as Jacobethan and Victorian Gothic which are essentially copied from different elements of period detail. However, there were many very fine faithful reproductions of 18th century originals made during this period and these later pieces tend to hold their value well.

Spotting a genuine antique dining chair is therefore not an exact science and you should go and see a reputable antique dealer before handing out large amounts of cash. When looking for antique dining chairs in Lancashire, local dealers will be able to advise you on age, style, quality and investment potential.

The pedestal desk is an imposing piece of antique furniture and started out its life in the grand libraries of the wealthy. From an example of this magnificent antique desk, the lord of the manor would carry out his business and domestic affairs.

Although mainly used by men, the desk had evolved from a feminine piece of furniture where it was used as a kneehole dressing table in the early part of the 18th century. At that time it was made of walnut rather than the mahogany most common in later examples and was decorative rather than functional. Indeed, the central division between the two sets of drawers was too narrow to place both legs comfortably.

The pedestal desk as it stands today was made larger during the middle of the 18th century and built from three separate units. These were the two large pedestals containing drawers either side, which were joined by the flat desk top. The fashion for these new larger desks to be made in mahogany rather than walnut coincided with severe shortages of walnut during the early to middle part of the century.

The popularity of this antique desk soared through its inclusion in Thomas Chippendale’s Gentlemen and Cabinet-Maker’s Director produced in 1754. Wealthy gentlemen were now able to visit Chippendale’s workshop and order the design they needed. Chippendale’s designs were extensively copied but as very few pieces of furniture made by him during the 18th century were actually signed ‘Chippendale’, most of these pieces are referred to as ‘Chippendale’ anyway.

One exception to this rule were pieces made by Robert Gillow of Lancaster who made variations on Chippendale’s designs and proudly stamped his firm’s name on each piece of furniture he produced, so these well made pieces are easily attributed to him.

The pedestal desk like other pieces of antique furniture reflected the styles of the time. Chippendale-designed furniture tended to follow the flowing and ornate lines of the French Rococo. He also collaborated with architect decorators, such as Robert Adam and fine examples are still to be found in Adam-designed houses today. Much simpler designed pieces made of lighter woods became more popular as the Rococo period moved into the much finer lines of the neo-classical period; designers such as George Hepplewhite and Thomas Sheraton also produced furniture guides as Chippendale had done.

The size and solidness of this particular design ensured its popularity with the size conscious Victorians and this antique desk really has never gone out of fashion, although has been sized down for modern town house and apartment living. These days, large period and revival examples of these antique desks tend to be used more in commercial settings or solicitors’ offices.

Fine examples of period and revival antique desks can be found through good UK antique furniture dealers in Lancashire, Cumbria, Cheshire and nationwide.
